FAQs
Getting started
Do I need to download an app?
No. Memtastic runs in your web browser (e.g. Safari or Chrome), on your phone, tablet or laptop/desktop. Just go to memtastic.com. Because there’s no app to install, you can try it before signing up, and why someone who has never used Memtastic can open a memory you share.
Do I need to register, or create a password?
Your mobile number is your account. Enter it, we text you a code, and you are in. There is no password. Unless you sign-out, you’ll stay signed in on that phone or computer for two weeks, so most of the time you land straight on your memories.
Where did my try-it memory go?
It was saved into your new account when you signed up. It is the first thing on your home screen.
What happens the first time I add a photo?
Memtastic looks at the photo, then asks you about it, one question at a time. Answer in your own words; you can type, or tap the microphone and talk. Keep going as long as you like. When you're finished, tap Done: Memtastic writes a short summary of the memory, and it appears under the photo on your home screen.
Where is everything? I only see my photos.
Your home screen lists every memory you can see, one card each; we call this list your “feed”. The menu in the top right corner holds your profile, settings, plan, and how to invite family. Tap Chat on a card to talk about that memory.
Memories and photos
What is a memory, exactly?
A memory is one or more photos that are related to each other (e.g. holiday event, special dinner, party, vacation, etc…). A new memory from the “+ Add Memory" button is located at the top of the feed screen. Each memory is shown as a unique card in your feed. A memory can hold up to ten photos from the same event, plus its story: a title, a short summary, and the details Memtastic has learned from your chats about it.
Can I add more photos to a memory?
Yes, up to ten per memory. On the card, tap the add-photo icon above the picture; inside a chat, tap the + next to the message box. Photos you add in a chat appear at the top of the memory, not inside your message.
Can I delete a photo, or a whole memory?
Yes. Tap the pencil (Edit) above the card. At the bottom of that screen you will find Delete This Photo and Delete Memory. Deleting a memory also removes its chats and everything Memtastic learned from them.
Can I change a photo's title, the memory title, or the summary?
Yes. Tap the pencil above the card. Each one has its own box and Save button. You can also tell Memtastic in a chat, but the boxes are the sure way to change what is shown.
It added incorrect context. How do I fix it?
Tell it in the chat, plainly: "That's my dad Al, not Chris." Memtastic saves the correction for that memory. Then look at the card. If the title or summary still shows the old detail, change it with the pencil. Corrections made in chat do not always reach the card yet; we are working on that.
Can I keep a memory to myself?
Yes. Tap the pencil and switch on Private to me. A private memory shows only in your own feed; other family members cannot see it, and it cannot be shared by link. Switch it off again any time.
Why does it sometimes get my photo wrong?
It starts from what it can see in the photo and what it has been told, so early on it can guess wrong, for example assuming you were there. Tell it, and the correction is saved for that memory. It is still learning, and we are improving how it handles corrections.
Texts and notifications
What are notifications?
Text messages from Memtastic that bring one of your memories back to you: a photo, a line about it, and a link. Tap the link and you are in a chat about that memory. They are texts, not alerts inside the app, and they are different from sharing a memory (that is the share link, above).
Why did I get a text from Memtastic?
Because you agreed to notifications when you signed in. Your first one arrives within an hour or so of saving your first memory, so you can see how it works. After that they follow the frequency you choose.
If you receive SMS, MMS, or RCS from Memtastic, you agreed to notifications in the app. Message frequency follows your notification settings. Message and data rates may apply.
Reply STOP to opt out of SMS, MMS, and RCS. Reply HELP for this information.
Who gets them?
Every member of a plan gets notifications and they can set their own frequency in Profile Settings; the Admin sets it for members on the Simplified Interface.
How often, and can I turn them off?
Notifications are managed in Menu -> Profile Settings. Frequency options include: Every Other Day, Weekly, Every Other Week, Monthly, or Never. You can also reply STOP to any text to stop all messages from Memtastic, and HELP for help. Message and data rates may apply.
Does my plan limit how many I get?
Yes. Each plan includes a number of pooled notifications per month, shown on your Subscriptions page. Sharing a memory by link does not use one.
Privacy and your data
If I upload a photo of my kids / grandkids / friends / myself is it out on the internet?
No. Nothing you add is public, and nothing is searchable. A photo is seen only by the members of your plan, and by anyone you personally send a share link to. Mark a memory Private and only you can see it.
Does Memtastic listen to my voice or record me?
When you use the microphone, your speech is turned into text and only the text is kept. Memtastic does not store recordings of your voice.
Do you use my photos and conversations to improve Memtastic?
Yes, as described in the Privacy Policy, which you agreed to at sign-in. Photos and conversations help us improve the product and train the models behind it. Conversations and photos from members we know to be under 18 are not used for training.
Does Memtastic recognize faces (e.g. facial recognition)?
No. It does not identify people by their faces. It knows who is in a photo only because you told it.
What happens when I delete something?
Deleting a photo or a memory removes it right away, along with its chats and what Memtastic learned from them. The photo files are gone within 30 days. Deleting your account (in Profile Settings) turns off sign-in at once and removes your data after 30 days. Stories other members told about a shared memory stay with them.
Can I download or export my memories?
Not today. Your memories live in Memtastic and are yours to view, share and delete.
Is Memtastic a healthcare company?
No. Memtastic makes no health claims and collects no health data. It is a family storytelling service.
Plans
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Signing in gives you a free trial: no credit card required, and it never expires. It includes a small number of photos, chats and notifications so you can see how Memtastic works; the current amounts can be seen in Menu -> Subscriptions.
What does a paid plan change?
Paid plans offer more photos, chats and notifications each month for your family: the plan also sets how many members you can invite. Three sizes of family plans are offered and are available monthly or yearly; see the Pricing page.
What happens when I hit a limit?
Memtastic tells you at the moment it matters, for example when you pick more photos than you have left this month, and points you to your plan. Nothing you have saved is lost.
Can two people in one family each have an account?
Yes. Each person has their own account, which is tied to their phone number. To share in a (Family) Plan’s pooled memories, chats, and notifications, both people need to be part of the same plan.
How do I upgrade, change or cancel?
Subscriptions in the menu shows your plan and usage. Manage Billing opens the billing page, where you can change or cancel; a cancelled plan runs to the end of the period you paid for, then returns to a free trial.
What countries does Memtastic support?
Currently the U.S. and Canada. The phone authentication supports the North American Numbering Plan (NANP): country code +1.
